Molding more than just dough...

What is it?  What is it about this lump of soft dough that is so inviting to children?  The way it squeezes between their fingers?  The pleasant smell?  The endless amount of things into which it can be formed?

All of the above and so much more!

The beauty of play dough lies in its simplicity but also in the possibilities!  Children of all ages and abilities can independently shape it, cut it, roll it, squish it and imprint in it (self-esteem and independence and discovery and exploration).   We use different tools and children have to learn how to ask for these tools and wait for them as well (communication).  Sharing is a big component of using play dough, whether it's making sure every child has enough dough or collaborating on a group project (interaction and cooperation).  Through the manipulation of tools and the dough, children build finger, hand and arm strength and dexterity which will benefit them when it comes time to learn how to write (physical development).  Artistic expression and appreciation abounds as friends create just about anything they can imagine!
