Today the friends began their exploration on spiders. They filled the day with various spider activities and more! The morning free choice included:
-using stamps and bright ink to create flower artwork
-building homes for ladybugs
-tiptoeing on the giant tape spider web and then wrapping bugs in yarn to pretend that we were spiders spinning bugs in silk
-creating with playdough and small popsicles sticks
For circle time the Red Room friends reviewed what butterflies, ants, and bee look like, and compared how they are different then our new focus bug, Spiders. We sang "Spiders have 8!" to learn that spiders have 8 legs as well as 8 eyes. We finished circle time by revisiting a favorite story from earlier in the year, "The Very Busy Spider" by Eric Carle.
The Blue Room friends began circle time comparing and contrasting our unit bugs, pointing out how spiders are different because they have 8 legs and 8 eyes. The further their exploration of spiders while reading "Anansi The Spider" by Gerald McDermott. To finish circle time, the friends sang "The Itsy Bitsy Spider". They then changed the words to "insey winsey" making their voices smaller and "giant" making their voices loud.
During Discovery Area the friends:
-built homes with translucent blocks for spiders on the light table
-dug for dinosaur bones in the sand table (the friends have been asking a lot about dinosaurs and have been pretending to be paleontologist throughout play)
-used paper shapes and glue sticks to create a one of a kind bug
-searched for bugs hidden in soapy water
-used pipe cleaners to poke into a styrofoam spider shape to represent the spiders hairs that will hang from our bulletin board bug display
-stuff socks then helped using a sewing machine with Mrs. Loomis to create legs for spider costumes to use in our Dramatic Play center
-visited the makeshop, where we used loose part materials to create bugs
We finished the day with a snack of ritz crackers and jelly then headed outside for a beautiful sunny day on the playground.
